Redbirds Win Opening Day

Ben Serie led Luverne past the Worthington Cubs on Mother’s Day. Serie struck out 14 batters as the righty led the Redbirds past the Cubs 10-0. Serie surrendered one hit and zero runs over five innings while walking one. Haugen, Ethan Beyer, and Cade Wenninger each came on in relief for the Redbirds and shut down the Cubs.

The Luverne Redbirds got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Serie singled, scoring one run, and Jake Haugen grounded out, scoring two runs. A ground out by Casey Sehr extended the Redbirds lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Jake Brandner started the game for Worthington. The starting pitcher allowed seven hits and seven runs over five innings, striking out five and walking three.

Luverne piled up nine hits in the game. Derek Lundgren, the number seven hitter for Luverne, led the way with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-4 on the day. Wenninger set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading the Redbirds with three hits in four at-bats. Haugen collected two hits for Luverne in four at-bats.

Triston Sauerbrei, Nathan VanNorman, Logan Huisman, and Tucker Brandner each collected one hit for Worthington. Worthington turned one double play in the game.
